Disc Herniation Tratment in Apple Valley
Also known as a slipped, ruptured or bulging disc, a herniated disc can cause pain that sidelines people from their favorite activities in life.
How Does Herniation Happen?
If you think of your disc as like a jelly doughnut, you have that harder part of the doughnut on the outside and the “jelly” on the inside; your disc is the same way. It can get injured due to a slip, fall, car accident or any kind of trauma. Lift and turning can also cause disc herniation. What happens is that jelly starts to spew out into that outer part, and that puts pressure on your nerves.
What Are Some Symptoms?
Those with disc herniation may experience the following:
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Radiculopathy pain (numbness or pain in the hips, legs or feet)
- Some people might end up with more functional deficits, like bowel and bladder issues
What to Expect
First, Dr. Pam will take a thorough history, then perform an exam. If she thinks you have a herniated disc, she will likely send you out for an MRI. Based on the results, she will talk about care.
Our Approach to Addressing Disc Herniation
Our doctors recommend the following:
Decompression with Back On Trac
With this non-surgical decompression, Dr. Pam will have you sit on the equipment, then she will place a strap on your legs and your arms will be over an armrest. The equipment has 21 settings, and calibrated traction is individually based on your unique needs.
The sessions consist of about 10 minutes of gentle stretching and decompression of the low back. Decompression helps separate and traction your low back, creating space between the vertebrae to almost suck back in the affected disc. Decompression helps relieve that nerve pressure and alleviate pain.
For someone with a right-sided disc herniation (the side of the nerve being irritated), Dr. Pam will put them into 10 or 20 degrees of less lateral flexion that would open up that right side, providing relief.
Chiropractic care
Dr. Pam will perform a chiropractic adjustment to ease your herniated disc symptoms.
Home care
This involves working on controlling inflammation through diet.
